ESNM Newsletter - October 2023

Our successful biennial meeting “NeuroGASTRO 2023”

Close to 500 delegates from over 46 countries attended the biennial NeuroGASTRO 2023 meeting in Bucharest from Aug 31st to Sept 2nd, with the excitement palpable as we returned to a face-to-face meeting for the first time since 2019. Key opinion leaders presented the state-of-the-art developments in the field of Neurogastroenterology and Motility. It was particularly inspiring to see the quality and breadth of topics presented by young scientists, via both oral and poster presentations.

Paul Enck receives ESNM Lifetime Achievement Award

Without him, our society, the ESNM, would not be where we are today! Congratulations to Professor Paul Enck for receiving the ESNM Lifetime Achievement Award. Paul was one of the founders of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology & Motility, and of the international young investigator meeting "Little Brain Big Brain". He pioneered the work of brain-gut axis, motility, placebo/nocebo etc. His lecture was entitled “Does the gut think, and if so, what does it think of”.

Acknowledging Excellence in Science

Each year, the ESNM biennial meeting Scientific Committee recognizes the highest scoring abstracts. There are three overall highest scoring abstract prizes, and another five Young Investigator Awards, and we extend our sincere congratulations to this year's winners.

That was TANDEM 2023 –

The ESNM Young Investigator Meeting

As with past TANDEM meetings, the goal of the 4th nEUROgastro TANDEM meeting in 2023 was to create a platform for building successful collaborations and to strengthen the exchange between clinical and basic research. Again, the team was very successful in creating a European network of young researchers and bringing together a new set of valuable expertise to gain new insights in the scientific field of Neurogastroenterology.

New Webinarseries "International School of Gut Microbiota in Digestive Disease"

Study shows Deficits in the Coverage of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in German Medical Curricula

Medical curricula in Germany largely neglect neurogastroenterology leading to medical students feeling highly insecure when dealing with the widespread irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as shown by a survey initiated by the German Society for Neurogastroenterology & Motility (DGNM).

Book Recommendation I

In alternating order we present interesting new publications to our members. In this issue we would like to draw your attention to the book "Gut Feelings--Doctors and Patient-Centered Care: How Knowledge, Commitment to Care, and Empathy Improve Patients' Lives" by Douglas A. Drossman and Johannah Ruddy (Author).

Book Recommendation II

Prof. Marcello Costa, who retired last year after 47 years at Flinders University, has published his scientific memoir, Adventures in Gut Neuroscience: a Biography. An interesting book, that describes Marcello Costas research life and many important moments, including the founding of the Australian Neuroscience Society and his role in the development of ENS research in Australia.
